I was on a Scout trip this weekend. We had thirteen new Scouts who were going to meet their patrols. That’s a new record. We’ve never had that many.
Six older Scouts welcomed them as patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders. They’ve spent the past year learning how to lead the younger ones. And it was so much fun to see that when they’re given real responsibility, they actually take it.
They can cook. They can build a fire. And now they feel confident showing younger children how to do it. They’ve gone from being led to being the ones who lead. A bit like older sisters and brothers looking after the new ones.
Then we sat around the campfire. We sang. Everyone shared what they were looking forward to. And I could feel that what we’ve spent three years building is actually bearing fruit. We have activities for more than twenty children every week. A place to come to. People to do things with.
I’d like to bring a little of that atmosphere to our campfire tonight.
But first, today’s reason to go outside:
Day 8: Take something to eat
Making dinner and eating together is one of the things I enjoy about our Scout trips.
