In my thirties, I got seriously ill. I had to quit my job. My husband cared for the kids. There was a lot of sorrow in realizing that the life I had planned for would not be inside corporate buildings. I had spent years in IT making plans and figuring things out.
Now I couldn’t figure out my own way forward.
I had a cup of coffee and my potted plants by the window. So that’s where I started.
I carried my coffee over and sat down among the plants. After a while, I started taking it outside. Drank it. Went back inside.
That was what I could do.
I wasn’t working toward a mountain. I wanted to get outside and see what I could manage. Some days that was sitting with my coffee.
Then I made it to the bench. Went for a short walk. Had coffee next to a fire. Not all in the same week. This took years.
I had no idea where it would lead. I tried something, and then I knew a little more about what I could do. Sometimes I could go a bit further.
I had to find that out for myself. I couldn’t sit inside and think my way into knowing what my body was capable of. Although I certainly tried.
Eventually, I stood on a mountaintop.
I hadn’t planned that from my window. Back then, it would have been too much to even consider. I was having coffee with my plants.
I still do.
Some mornings that’s the whole trip.
